Xi’an City Wall stands as a monumental symbol of ancient Xi’an, embodying the city’s rich history and architectural prowess. Constructed during the early Ming Dynasty, this imposing structure is renowned as the most complete city wall in China, boasting a total length of 13.7 kilometers. Visitors can embark on a leisurely bicycle ride along the wall, completing the journey in approximately 80 minutes.

The design of the city wall draws inspiration from the imperial city layout of the Tang Dynasty, featuring defensive elements such as moats and watchtowers typical of ancient Chinese cities. Today, the wall serves as a tangible link to Xi’an’s past, dividing the city into inner and outer sections. The South Gate and North Gate serve as the primary entrances to the inner city, with the urban layout neatly arranged along the perimeter of the wall.

Constructed between 1370 and 1378 AD under the directive of Zhu Yuanzhang, the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty, the Xi’an Ancient City Wall was built upon the foundation of the imperial city wall from the Tang Dynasty. Zhu Yuanzhang, following the advice of a recluse, fortified the city with high walls and ample food supplies before ascending to the throne. As the former capital of the Tang Dynasty, known as Chang’an, Xi’an holds significant historical significance. Today, the Xi’an Ancient City Wall stands as the largest and best-preserved ancient city wall in China, a testament to the city’s enduring legacy and architectural brilliance.
