Chengzi Ancient Village, nestled amidst the picturesque landscapes of Luxi County in Yunnan, China, is a quaint settlement steeped in history and folklore. Located on the Feifeng Slope, rising over 200 meters high, the village spans an area of 55.59 hectares. Surrounded by Longpan Mountain to the east, Yuping and Bijia Mountain to the west, Furong Mountain to the north, and Jinding Mountain to the south, the village is embraced by meandering rivers that add to its scenic charm.

Legend has it that the ancestors of the Yi tribe selected this site, constructing 24 earthen palm houses using the branches and leaves of a single tree. Each house accommodated a family, and thus, the village thrived for generations. During the Ming Dynasty’s Chenghua era, the local Tuzhifu (official in charge of land and water affairs) established his yamen here, renaming the village “Yonganfu” from its original name, Chengzi Village. This marked the beginning of the village’s growth into a government center, a legacy that has endured for over five centuries.

Over the years, Chengzi Village has fostered a harmonious community spirit, with villagers engaging in traditions of matchmaking and mutual assistance. The design of the traditional Tuzhang houses, known for their warmth in winter and coolness in summer, not only reflects practical considerations but also symbolizes the open-hearted nature of its inhabitants, fostering an atmosphere of trust and camaraderie. Through generations, the village has retained its simplicity and friendliness, embodying the enduring spirit of its people.
