The Yangling Mausoleum of the Han Dynasty, commonly known as Han Yang Ling, is situated in Zhangjiawan Village, approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of Xi’an City in Shaanxi Province. This ancient burial site serves as the final resting place for Liu Qi, a prominent emperor of the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-24 AD), and his empress, Wang. Constructed in the year 153 AD, the mausoleum encompasses an expansive area spanning 20 square kilometers (4,942 acres).
As a magnificent cultural relic, Han Yang Ling comprises several key features, including the tombs of the emperor and empress, as well as the south and north burial pits, ceremonial sites, human sacrifice graveyard, and a criminals’ cemetery. The meticulous arrangement of these elements, centered around the emperor’s tomb, offers insight into the strict hierarchical social structure of the Han Dynasty.
Notably, the Outside Pits Exhibition Hall, established in 2006, serves as the first underground museum in China. This exhibition hall provides visitors with an immersive experience, showcasing artifacts and insights gleaned from the archaeological excavations conducted at Han Yang Ling.
