The Bailong Elevator, located in the Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area of Zhangjaijie, is an engineering marvel that holds several world records. As the highest, fastest, fully exposed outdoor double-decker sightseeing elevator with the largest capacity globally, it offers visitors an exhilarating ascent and descent through the stunning landscapes of Zhangjiajie.
With a remarkable vertical height of 335 meters (1,100 feet) and a running height of 326 meters, the Bailong Elevator stands as the tallest sightseeing elevator worldwide. Its construction was a monumental undertaking, requiring meticulous planning and execution. The project took 2 years and 7 months to complete, from September 1999 to April 2002, at a cost of CNY 180 million.
The elevator’s design comprises two main components: a 154-meter (500 feet) solid well inside the mountains and a 172-meter (560 feet) steel derrick against the mountains. With a remarkable speed of 3 meters per second (10 feet/s), the Bailong Elevator can ascend or descend the 326-meter height in just 1 minute and 58 seconds, seamlessly connecting Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain, Golden Whip Stream, and other key scenic areas. This allows tourists to maximize their time and fully immerse themselves in the breathtaking beauty of Zhangjiajie.
