Situated just beyond the northern entrance of Fragrant Hills Park, approximately 17 miles (28 kilometers) northwest of Beijing City, lies the Temple of Azure Clouds, also known as Biyun Temple. Originally constructed during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), this historic site underwent extensive reconstruction during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, with its interior buildings preserving the distinctive architectural style of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) to this day.
Upon passing through the Mountain Gate adorned with stone lions, visitors are greeted by a deep pool that never dries up, flanked by two imposing Buddhist guardians intricately carved during the Ming Dynasty, each standing at a towering height of 16 feet (5 meters). Beyond the gate lies the Front Palace, where the stout figure of Maitreya is prominently displayed. Continuing further, visitors encounter the Sakyamuni’s Palace, featuring statues of Sakyamuni and his disciples, as well as the revered Arhats, offering a glimpse into Buddhist iconography and spiritual practices.
