The Guanfu Museum stands as mainland China’s pioneering private museum, boasting a remarkable collection of fine porcelain, cloisonné, ancient furniture, and intricately carved windows and doors. While not as expansive as some larger museums, it offers a perfect showcase of Chinese artifacts. For visitors with ample time in Beijing, a visit to this museum is highly recommended.

Founded by Ma Weidu in 1996, the museum owes its origins to his passion for collecting, which began in the 1980s. At a time when few were engaged in collecting antiques, Ma Weidu pursued his passion despite societal norms. Initially located in central Beijing’s Liulichang, the museum quickly outgrew its space and relocated twice before settling into its current expansive location. Encompassing 3,000 square meters, it features various departments dedicated to ancient porcelain, classic Chinese furniture, works of art, oil paintings, and classic doors and windows. The museum’s layout is meticulously designed, with exhibits accompanied by explanatory captions in both Chinese and English.

The exhibition on Chinese porcelain is particularly noteworthy, showcasing approximately 140 exquisite pieces dating from the 10th to the 18th century (spanning the Tang to Qing Dynasty). Each piece represents a masterful fusion of artisanal skill and dedication, with highlights including a porcelain vase adorned with floral panels from the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty, which garners significant attention.
