The Lingering Garden, spanning an impressive 5.8 acres (about 23,300 square meters) outside Changmen Gate in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, is a gem of classical Chinese garden design. Originally a private garden, it has earned its place among China’s four most famous gardens.
Exuding the distinctive style of the Qing Dynasty, the Lingering Garden captivates visitors with its magnificent halls and a plethora of buildings in various sizes, shapes, and colors. Recognized for its exquisite beauty, the garden was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1997.
With a rich history spanning over 400 years, the Lingering Garden has undergone several transformations under different owners, each striving to enhance its beauty. Constructed in 1593 during the Ming Dynasty by retired official Xu Tai, it was later owned by calligraphy enthusiast Liu Shu during the Qing Dynasty. Liu Shu adorned the corridors with his masterful calligraphy and adorned the garden with uniquely shaped stones, setting a precedent for future owners.
Despite facing near-demolition in the 1930s, the Lingering Garden was restored with government sponsorship and opened to the public, ensuring that its timeless beauty continues to enchant visitors from around the world.
