Former French Concession

Opening Hours: All day

The Former French Concession in Shanghai offers a stark contrast to the bustling modernity of the city, providing a tranquil escape characterized by European-style villas and early 20th-century architecture. Amidst the skyscraper-filled landscape, this area stands as a testament to Shanghai’s rich history and unique beauty.

Dating back to 1849, the Former French Concession gradually evolved into the largest and most prosperous French concession in China. By the 1920s, it had become renowned as the best and wealthiest residential area in Shanghai. However, in 1943, the Chinese government reclaimed control, bringing an end to nearly a century of French influence.

Today, the Former French Concession remains a distinct area of the city, although its exact boundaries may be somewhat ambiguous. Generally situated south of Yan’an Road, north of Zhaojiabang Road and Xujiahui Road, east of Huashan Road, and west of the Huangpu River, the district offers visitors a chance to explore its historic streets and soak in its serene ambiance.

Strolling through the Former French Concession, one can admire the charming architecture, from grand villas to quaint cafes, each reflecting the area’s rich cultural heritage. It’s a place where time seems to stand still, offering a glimpse into Shanghai’s past while providing a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of modern city life.
