Huaqing Pool, situated in close proximity to the picturesque Mount Li and approximately 30 kilometers away from Xian City, holds a storied history as a temporary resort palace favored by emperors spanning multiple dynasties, including the Zhou, Qin, Han, Sui, and Tang Dynasties. Renowned for its abundant hot spring resources since ancient times, Huaqing Pool serves as a poignant landmark embodying the essence of Tang Culture in China.

Beyond its breathtaking natural vistas and classic Tang architectural splendor, Huaqing Pool is steeped in historical events, imperial romances, and literary lore that have contributed to its enduring fame.

Chief among these tales is the legendary romance between Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty and his beloved consort, Yang Guifei. Yang Guifei, cherished by Emperor Xuanzong, enjoyed the privilege of accompanying him to Huaqing Pool, where he lavished her with the honor of bathing together in its rejuvenating waters. Historians note that Emperor Xuanzong visited Huaqing Palace over 36 times during his 44-year reign, underscoring the significance of this tranquil retreat in their relationship.

However, the tranquility of their union was shattered by the rebellion led by An Lushan. Amidst the chaos of the uprising, Yang Guifei met a tragic end, forced to take her own life under imperial decree as Emperor Xuanzong fled to Chengdu. This heartbreaking episode, immortalized in the poetry of Bai Juyi as “the song of everlasting sorrow,” resonates through the halls of Huaqing Palace to this day.
