Luoyang Old Town District, nestled in the northeastern part of Luoyang, Henan Province, is a picturesque area steeped in rich history and cultural heritage. Its backdrop features the majestic Mengshan Mountain, while the famed Longmen Grottoes overlook it, with the Luo River meandering through its heart. With a venerable history spanning over 3,000 years, it traces its origins back to the city of “Luo Yi,” established by the Duke of Zhou.

Encompassing an area of 56.7 square kilometers, Luoyang Old Town District comprises one township and seven sub-districts. Throughout the ages, it has served as a pivotal political, economic, and cultural hub, boasting a legacy that epitomizes the essence of Heluo Culture, cultivated along the Yellow River and Luo River. This district has nurtured the development of oriental civilization and was the birthplace of significant innovations, including papermaking by Cailun.

Luoyang has also been immortalized in the works of renowned poets such as Li Bai, Du Fu, and Bai Juyi, who drew inspiration from its scenic beauty and historical significance. The remnants of bygone eras are scattered across the landscape, with notable landmarks like the Lijing Gate of the Sui Dynasty, the Temple of the Duke of Zhou from the Sui Dynasty, the Wenfeng Pagoda of the Song Dynasty, and the Fuwen Temple of the Yuan Dynasty.

Among its architectural treasures are the Hall of Glory (Mingtang) erected during the Tang Dynasty, the Drum Tower of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and a myriad of ancient streets and traditional dwellings. Luoyang Old Town District has leveraged its cultural legacy to foster tourism, with clusters of ancient buildings offering visitors a glimpse into the city’s storied past and flourishing heritage.
