Mutianyu Great Wall History

The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall was originally constructed in the mid-6th century and was rebuilt in its current form during the Ming Dynasty in 1569. For its vital and special situation, Mutianyu had been an important martial barrier for long time. And till Ming dynasty, a series of war broke out. In order to protect the national capital and the imperial mausoleum of Ming dynasty, the Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang ordered his general Xu Da to build this great wall in 1368. Although Mutianyu Great Wall has experience damages and reparation for several times, it is the most-preserved section of great wall relics of Ming dynasty.

Due to wartimes and the effects of Nature, the wall had to be reconstructed several times. In 1987 Mutianyu section was appraised as one of the 16 best scenic spots of Beijing city. Mutianyu is since then definitely the largest construction scale of best quality among all sections of the Great Wall.

Mutianyu Great Wall Facts and Tips

• Walking up to the Wall from the base will take around 40-60 minutes.
• The cable car takes you directly to Tower 14 and the chairlift takes you to Tower 6.
• Between Tower 4 and Tower 19 is relatively flat and suitable for elders or people with limited mobility
• Climb to Tower 1 or Tower 23 require at least 3 hours. The climb is steep but you get great panoramic views of the whole length of Mutianyu Great Wall.Further beyond these towers are unrestored parts which are not open to tourists but you can still enter and have a glimpse of the beauty of the wild Great Wall.
• Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, in summer please bring sunscreen and hat.
• Bring your own water is recommended, although there are plenty places to buy water, snacks, and souvenirs near the parking lot (there is even a Subway restaurant), but the price is higher.
• There are restrooms both at the parking lot and along the Wall near tower 10, 14 and 7
• Although Mutianyu Great Wall has less tourists than Badaling, during peak season you may need to wait 1 hour for ski lift or cable car. Start early at 6;30am or 7:00am is recommend to avoid crowds during peak season.
