Biasha Miao Village is called as “the Last Gunslinger Village in China”.The Biasha people, who are believed to be the descendants of the mythological warrior Chi You, have a unique tradition of owning and carrying guns, which is still legally permitted in China. This ancient practice, dating back 2000 years, sets them apart from the rest of the country. This strategy aimed to prevent overpopulation and ensure sustainable use of resources. By regulating the balance between population growth and agricultural capacity, the rule aimed to safeguard the long-term prosperity and stability of the community. Such measures were crucial in maintaining harmony between human settlements and the natural environment during that era.According to the legend, there is a herbalist in the village who uses the mythical herbs to control the population. Before couples try to have a second child, they come to the herbalist. She will take water out of one of two wells – a “boy well” and a “girl well” – and brews a soup with a local herb with it. By drinking the mixture, the couple can allegedly decide the sex of their next baby. During the early Qing Dynasty, the ancestors of Zhanli implemented a rule to maintain equilibrium between the population size and the amount of cultivated land available.
